Can students have a cell phone during the day?
Under
Board Policy 902.15, Use of Personal Electronic Communication Devices by Students, The Board of Education of Anne Arundel
County believes the maintenance of a safe and orderly learning environment is a priority in ensuring student success. While the Board of Education encourages communication among the school, parents and
students, it also recognizes that the use of certain personal electronic communication devices may disrupt the instructional
process.
Prohibitions:
A. Students are prohibited from using,
activating or displaying personal electronic communication devices on school property or at school-sponsored activities during
the school day unless approved by the school principal for a specific educational and/or administrative purpose.
B. Students are prohibited from using,
activating or displaying personal electronic devices at all times while riding to and from school or school-sponsored activities
on a school bus or school chartered vehicle.
C. Students are prohibited from using,
activating or displaying personal electronic devices during instructional programs that extend beyond the school day.
The
Anne Arundel County Public Schools is not responsible for the loss, theft, damage or destruction of any personal electronic
communication device. Students
who violate this policy will have their cell phone taken. The cell phone will
have to be picked up in the main office by a parent.
What do I do if I am absent from school?
Anytime that your child is absent from school, he/she must have a note when returning to school stating the child’s
name, grade, reason for being absent and the date/s absent. This note must be
signed by the parent/guardian and turned in to the first period teacher AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CLASS. Students who are legally absent from school will be able to make up assignments missed. It is the student’s responsibility to see their teachers to get any makeup work.
County policy states that students have 3 school days to return an absence note or the absence will be coded as an illegal
absence. If a student accumulates 3 illegal absences in a single marking period, he or she will fail ALL COURSES for
that marking period.
What do I do if I have a doctor's appointment during the day?
If your child needs to leave school early for an appointment or other reason, your child must bring a note to school on that day requesting that he/she be dismissed early. Please state the time you need to pick up your child
and the reason. If you want your child to meet you outside, please include this
in your note. If someone other than the parent/guardian is signing your child
out, that person’s name/relation to student must be stated on the note and that person must be prepared to show a picture
I.D. Your child should bring the note to the office in the morning with their
hall pass (after reporting to their 1st period teacher). Following
this process will help us prevent interruption to our daily instruction. Also,
when you follow this procedure, your child should be waiting for you in the main office when you arrive. Please help us reach our goal. Also, parents, for security reasons, please remember to be ready to show your identification.
What if I need to get in touch with my child during the school
day?
Please understand that the office staff can only interrupt classes for extremely urgent or emergency messages. These message may have to be approved by an administrator before they will be delivered.
We can NOT call a student to the office to take a phone call. If you have an emergency and need to get in touch with
your child, only a parent or guardian may call the school in this situation, and the identify will have to be verified before
a message is delivered. It may require you coming to school to present a photo identification. Please try
to give your child any information you may need them to have before they leave for school in the morning. We also discourage students from
last minute calls at the end of the school day to request permission to stay for an activity. We encourage our students
to make these important plans with parents before school.
What if I my student becomes ill during the school day?
Education is the primary reason a student attends school. To decrease
the amount of class time that is missed due to unnecessary visits to the Health Room, the following guidelines have been developed.
The purpose of the Health Room in the school is to provide care for acutely ill and injured students, maintain optimum health
of chronically ill students, and administer medications that are required during school hours.
Emergency services are also provided
According to the Control of Communicable Disease Guidelines, a “well” student should not be sitting in the Health
Room, risking exposure to communicable disease from an “ill” child
Students reporting to the health room with minor complaints, without any signs of communicable
disease or a fever of 101° F., will be sent back to class. If they ask, they will be permitted to call their parent. If
a parent decides to pick the student up, they will gather their belongings and sit in a designated area outside of the health
room for pick up. If a parent cannot be reached or decides the student should
remain in school, the student will be sent back to class. Any student showing
signs of communicable disease or fever of 101° F, will remain in the Health Room until a parent picks them up.
Students complaining of injuries that are more than 48 hours old should not come to the health room for ice. Application of ice after 48 hours is not therapeutic. Students who need a new band-aid for an old injury should not come to the Health Room.
What if my family is going on vacation during the school year?
While
missing extended periods of time is highly discouraged, we realize that certain situations may arise which makes it necessary
for a student to be away with their family during the school year. If this situation arises, please send a note in to
first period teacher 2 weeks prior to the dates of absence. On the note, please include the student's name, grade, dates
of absence and reason for absence. An administrator must approve the time missed, and it will count as full absence
days for the student. Teachers will then be notified and may have the opportunity to provide work for the student.
What do we do about early closings or late openings?
There
are a few scheduled early closings to allow teachers to work on grades at the end of each marking period. Those are
available on the aacps website, under the calendar section. If weather requires us to open late or to dismiss early,
PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL. We are unable to handle a large amount of calls. Please
listen to the radio or watch the morning news to check for weather related delays or closings.
What happens when it's raining in the morning?
When
there is inclement / rainy / snowy weather in the morning, students are able to enter through the cafeteria lobby door (the
normal 6th grade entrance) at approximately 8:40 and wait quietly in the cafeteria until the bell rings for the school day
to begin. Because staff member will be on duty in the cafeteria during inclement weather days, normal 7th and 8th grade
entrance doors may be locked.
